  12.
  1. Will it (usually a low end colour laser printer such as - Minolta 2400W, or 2430DL) print Photo Quality?

  2. First you need to define Photo quality. If you are after the output that your local photo development, then the answer is NO. The question that you must ask yourself is - can you tell the difference and is it worth the price for the odd few that Really have to be at that quality.
You can spend under $700.00 and get a unit that really prints every thing you practically need and then some without being too expensive to run OR you can spend well over the 2 to 3 thousand range to get marginally better print for the odd time that is the quality is REALLY needed.

So if you are after good quality output, that is very close the answer is a definite YES! These Colour Laser printers can output exceptional quality. Many professional Photographers have purchased them from us in order to do their proofs for their customers (The 2450 is best for this the 2400Dl is better and the 2400w is good value).

Don't forget that they are only as good as the image you are trying to print. We suggest a minimum of a QUALITY 3megapixel camera on its highest quality settings and resolution to give realistic outputs at A5 sized prints, these will be reasonable at A4 size; this is a value judgment and it is best to compare before you buy. We give demonstrations in our real show room (extra cost for your files).

You wont get a very good output from a photo you may have received in an email that is 30kb's in size, it will be very disappointing. We have in our office a Demo 2430dl and using a Minolta Dimage XT (3mp) camera, the output is good and we use it to print full-size A4 photos.

  3. Something about Resolution, Pixels and DPI?

  4. To better handle images we need to understand the subtle differences between Resolution, Pixels and DPI in both the electronic and displayed forms.

An image of a certain size will have a number of pixels in the horizontal and vertical directions to form the image. Pixels are the small dots that form the image. These can be viewed by magnifying the image until these are visible. This can be expressed as say 640*480. This is the resolution of the image, the number of pixels in our image; from the image we can extract information down to 640 pixels horizontally and 480 pixels vertically.

Image shown magnified approx 8 times showing pixilation. The DPI was reduced and the image increased in size. See how the pixel size has increased!

Think in terms of a brick wall we can have 640 bricks horizontally and 480 bricks vertically that is the resolution of our wall. The bricks are the pixels of our image. The resolution is the number of pixels within an image.

An image can be physically displayed in different sizes by varying the size of the pixels. Consider the brick wall if we use the same number of bricks but use bricks that are larger the wall size will increase. The resolution or the number of bricks remain the same but the wall or displayed size is larger.

If we double the size or spacing of the pixel in both directions, the area of the image increase by a factor of 4. Think about it!

Dots per Inch (DPI) is a term related to the out put of an image and is not related to its resolution. Do not confuse the DPI of an image with the DPI of a printer (covered by an other FAQ). DPI is the number of pixels the image is displayed at, so many pixels (dots) per inch. For an image with 640*480 pixels if it was displayed at 80 DPI it would be 8*6 inches in size, if displayed at 160 DPI it would be 4*3 inches etc.

Consider the brick wall, in the above example the bricks are laid at different spacing; so many bricks per metre or dots per inch. The wall size will vary in proportion to the DPI or brick spacing but the resolution or number of bricks will remain the same. If the DPI for a given image is increased the size of the displayed image will reduce. The resolution or number of bricks will remain not change as the size of the image or the wall is reduced as the DPI or the number of bricks per metre increases.  This is important think about it.

  7. What is coverage and how does it affect cost?

  8. Good question! we consider the cost to print just as important as the initial purchase.

The Industry uses a standard coverage of 5% to base all consumption and usage of consumable items. That is if the page was covered by toner to the extent that 5% of the surface was covered by that toner then 5% coverage is achieved.
If two colours say Cyan and Yellow are blended equally to make green and green covers 5% of the page then you have a 5% coverage of both colours on that page.

It is difficult even for a trained eye to determine the coverage of the page as it depends on the amount of toner mixed to form the colours and the intensity of each colour. To assist you we have provided two Fact Sheets that show sample page layouts and the calculated toner coverage for that page. You can access these Fact Sheets for the 2300 series Minolta printer Fact Sheet A + Fact Sheet B and see how the different layouts affect coverage and cost.( costs are RRP and are current as of Jan 2004, ask us for updates)

Using the cost of the toner for your printer divide it by the std. capacity specified by the manufacturer. This will give you the cost per page at 5% coverage of that toner. (if you bought the toner from us your lucky you are already saving) Compare your layout to the std layouts in the Fact Sheets. If your overall toner usage in accordance with the Fact Sheet is say 20% then the cost of that page is 4 times (4 * 5% = 20% coverage) the cost per page of the toner calculated above. Note that all three colours can be combined for costing but the black will have to be calculated separately and added to the colours as the cost per page is generally cheaper. The other consumables of the machine have to be included to give a full cost to print. Such as the drum or OPC unit etc. include these as you did the toners.

  9. What will this cost me to print and how does it compare to Ink Jets?

  10. Do the calculations and see how cheap the 2300 series Minolta are to print this can cost from 15 cents per page at 5% coverage of all toners including other consumables for a full cost to print.

Your average Photo quality inkjet will print an A4 size photo at a cost to you of anywhere between $5-$15 the Minolta 2300 series does it for you for less than $1!!!. How many photo's are you likely to print and you will realize that it won't take long before you paid off the printer and saving money when compared to the ink jets. They are an exceptionally popular option for small real estate offices, schools, small offices, and of course home usage.

Have you ever wondered why you never get the nominal capacity of an ink jet cartridge specified?? To be realistic they are too scared to advertise this fact. With some exceptions they are just too expensive to do more than just spot colour on your day to day work.

  11. Speed what Speed?

The good value 2300 series Minolta prints at 16ppm in Black and 4ppm in Colour. This is at full coverage and full specs. The unit is faster than most if not all inkjets. Don't be fooled at the speed spec's of some Ink Jet units, these are generally at low coverage and draft mode, the speed grinds to a halt at anywhere near the Minolta's 2300 quality.

Now if you want speed we can talk Minolta or Xerox in the 24ppm range full speed and spec's. you don't get this in Ink Jets.

For blinding SPEED you have to have the Xerox Phaser 7750, just unbeatable for Quality, Performance and Reliability. Unsurpassed in any office environment. First page out in 11 seconds and 35 pages per minute in both B/W and Colour. Minute after minute day in day out. 150,000 pages per month duty cycle, unstoppable.

  12. What is Solid Ink?

Everyone knows about Ink Jets - with good quality out put but the speed and the durability of the output has a lot to be desired .well the Xerox Phaser range of Solid Ink printers are essentially Ink Jets that melt the ink to print, however they are built like a rock for the heavy office environment. For the Xerox Phaser 8400 the speed is a rapid 24 pages per minute and a duty cycle of 85,000 pages per month. Its that good we don't even consider it for environments under 500 pages per month.

If you say you want the most vibrant, stand out of the page output regardless of cost then the Phaser 8400 is what is recommended. the good news is that it is one of the cheaper units in the Xerox Phaser range and it is comparable in running costs.

You have to see the output to believe it. Ask us for some print samples, drop in and have a look, you won't be disappointed.

  13. Scanning and Coping?

Many printers can be converted into functional Photocopiers very simply and at a fraction of the cost of a copier. By connecting the correct scanner a printer can become a walk up full colour hi resolution photocopier. In the Avision and Cannon range are units that will give a no compromise copier that can be matched to most of the popular range of printers.

We can recommend scanners that operate direct to the printer without needing any connection to the computer, simply walk up to the flat bed and press copy.

Thinking of A3 printing and copying we can set you up for $6,500. Price current July 2005

The paperless office is approaching and there are many customers now scanning all documents to file with a document retrieval system that within a fraction of a second find and retrieve an invoice, letter or file. A whole filing cabinet can now be stored on a CD. Years of records can be stored in a top pocket.

How much rent is paid by companies in storing archived documentation. How much time is spent retrieving files and old records. Often more than the original job was worth. If you need storage problems, or spend too much resources in retrieval or just want to know more on this vital storage system, call and we can help.
